Die WS2812 LED’s verfügen über einen integrierten, digitalen Steuerungschip, der es ermöglicht alle verketteten LEDs gemeinsam anzusteuern und dabei einzeln zu adressieren. Im Detail kann jeder RGB-LED sowohl eine eigene Farbe, Farbsättigung als auch Helligkeit zugewiesen werden. Neben der Stromversorgung bedarf es lediglich einer einzigen Datenleitung. Die Software-seitige Ansteuerung erfolgt mittels eines Mikrocontrollers, beispielsweise Arduino, STM32, ESP8266, ESP32, Raspberry Pi Pico, … je nach MCU und verwendete IDE sind zahlreiche Bibliotheken verfügbar.
